Email weakness

August, 2019

There is no doubt that Wi-Fi is one of the most amazing technologies that we have access to. Being able to access the internet from almost anywhere is something that provides a very high level of convenience. It also is one that comes with a lot of risks particularly when using what is called unsecure Wi-Fi. These are when you are taking advantage of Wi-Fi that is being offered to you when you are in public settings, for example. Most often when you are accessing Wi-Fi in this form you are using unsecured Wi-Fi.

Troubleshooting

Most often when you are using Wi-Fi in this form it is because you want to access your email which means that you're going to need to enter your email password and your login information, and this is one of the reasons why you want to have a really strong password. If you are sending private text messages you want to have a system built in where you can use encryption so these cannot to be tampered with. A common practice for many when they are away and using unsecured Wi-Fi is to access their bank which again means using passwords and PIN numbers and all of these are easily accessed by a savvy hacker that is prowling the unsecured Wi-Fi system. Some of the common habits that we fall into are when we are accessing accounts like our Facebook that for convenience sake we remain logged in which means that we are leaving the door open for hackers.

While this sounds scary it really is but there are steps that you can take to make yourself more secure when using this type of Wi-Fi. What has to be remembered is that hackers know what their task is and they are good at it. It is said that hackers that are using the unsecure Wi-Fi for their tactics can go about their work much faster and easier than what it would be to put a virus on your computer.

If you are surfing the web and visiting sites you have no way of knowing if they are safe or not by blatantly looking at them. However, there is a way that you can tell if it is a safe site and that is using encryption technology. This is by looking to see whether there is an “S” at the end of the H TTP in the URL if this is present and you see HTTPS then you can be assured that the site is using encryption security.

You can also take an extra step by enabling WPA or WPA2 for your network. When you do this it helps to keep hackers out of your personal area. Also a quick step is to remember to turn off the sharing feature when you are using an unsecured Wi-Fi. Ideally if you can avoid using unsecured Wi-Fi systems that is the best security that you can put in place. This is why it is important that you strongly consider making sure that you have a good quality antivirus program on all your devices. While you may have taken this step for your home computer remember that your mobile devices are vulnerable and it is well worth the extra investment to protect them.
